How to calculate % of a number
Multiply the number by the percentage, then divide by 100.
Example: 25% of 80 = (25 × 80) ÷ 100 = 20
Example: 25% of 80 = (25 × 80) ÷ 100 = 20
How to calculate % increase
Subtract old from new, divide by old, multiply by 100.
Example: 50 → 75 = ((75−50) ÷ 50) × 100 = 50%
Example: 50 → 75 = ((75−50) ÷ 50) × 100 = 50%
% difference vs % change
% change has direction (increase or decrease). % difference is always positive and uses the average of both values as the base.
How to find the original value
Divide the final value by (1 + pct/100) for increases, or (1 − pct/100) for decreases.
Example: 120 after 20% increase → 120 ÷ 1.2 = 100
Example: 120 after 20% increase → 120 ÷ 1.2 = 100
